Screw pumps

Gentle and precise conveying of demanding media

Screw pumps reliably pump low to highly viscous, highly volatile or gaseous media, even with non-lubricating properties. The option of using the process pump for CIP or SIP cleaning at the same time makes this pump type particularly attractive for the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. The non-contact operation makes the screw pump safe to run dry and insensitive to gas in the pumped medium.

Functionality

The screw pump works according to the positive displacement principle and belongs to the group of positive displacement pumps. Two intermeshing screw spindles intermesh as rotor and counter-rotor in the housing. Due to the rotational movement, these convey the medium in the threaded cavities continuously and gently to the outlet with low shear forces.

The flow direction can be reversed by changing the direction of rotation. The flow rate remains uniform and reproducible. An additional module with throat and feed screw is available for highly viscous media.

Use and operation

Key advantages of screw pumps in operation

It impresses with its low-pulsation, constant and particularly gentle conveying, which means that even sensitive media can be transported. Media with a gas content of up to 60 % are reliably conveyed. The pump is easy to clean using CIP and SIP - ideal for hygienic applications. Dry-running protection or heating jackets are optionally available. The design is compact and easy to maintain. Large adjustment ranges enable flexible operating conditions. The reversible conveying direction and the option of horizontal or vertical installation offer maximum flexibility in terms of installation.

Typical areas of application and pumped media

Typical areas of application for the screw pump are in the food and beverage industry (fruit juices, concentrates, dairy products, smoothies), in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and cosmetics (enzymes, collagen, cell suspensions, perfume, peeling creams) as well as in chemistry and surface technology (demineralized water, hydrocarbons, fuels, oily solutions). Other applications can be found in the construction and transportation sectors as well as in industry, for example in the movement of hydraulic fluids, industrial greases, mineral oils and suspensions.

Design, variants and selection criteria

The reliable function of the pump depends to a large extent on correct dimensioning. As with all pumps, parameters such as viscosity, temperature and pumped liquid determine the optimum configuration. You can choose from various screw geometries, connection configurations and materials such as stainless steel as well as certifications such as ATEX. Variants such as the high-temperature version or high-pressure version offer additional options for users. For large speed ranges between the individual operating points, for example for CIP or SIP cleaning, an additional gear ratio can open up the necessary volume flow range. This allows large ranges such as between 175 rpm and 2650 rpm to be covered.

Screw pumps enable reliable pumping with low maintenance requirements.

Integration into existing systems

When integrating a screw pump into an existing system, the focus is on smooth integration into the system. Existing pipelines, connection standards, space requirements and existing drive and control concepts are specifically taken into account in order to minimize adaptation costs and downtimes.

As part of retrofit projects, we replace your existing components or optimize your pump, for example to improve efficiency, operational reliability or maintenance. A careful analysis of the current situation ensures that the new solution is technically compatible, existing processes continue to run stably and future requirements are taken into account.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

Thanks to their virtually pulsation-free and gentle operation, they are particularly suitable for pressure- and shear-sensitive media such as cell suspensions, enzymes or emulsions.

Depending on the design, pumped media from very low to high temperatures (sometimes over 200 °C) are possible, for example for oils or chemical applications.

Conditionally; slightly abrasive media can also be conveyed with suitable materials, but a precise consideration of the application is decisive.

The flow rate is directly proportional to the speed, allowing precise and flexible control of the volume flow.

Dry running should be avoided with a single mechanical seal, as this leads to damage to the seals. The use of a double, flushed mechanical seal, on the other hand, allows dry running under suitable conditions.

Yes, as long as the materials are compatible, it can be used flexibly for different media, for example in multi-purpose chemical or industrial plants.

Screw pumps are basically self-priming - they generate a vacuum on the suction side when starting up. In practice, the self-priming height is up to 9 m water column, depending on the design and medium. The actual performance depends on the operating conditions.
